17 April Update

As of April 17 2020, Progreso Relief has delivered 311 despensas to families in Progreso and Chicxulub. Over the next two weeks, we will again be ramping up our delivery schedule and will provide an additional 489 despensas. Thanks to the generosity of many people in the United States, Canada and Mexico, we are providing emergency food baskets to 800 families. We have sufficient funds to provide these despensas through the end of April.

Therefore, beginning today, we cannot guarantee that any new families requesting food baskets will receive one from Progreso Relief. We will keep their names on a standby list and, if we receive more money over the next couple of weeks, we will be able to provide despensas (or possibly other assistance) to these families into the month of May.

We began Progreso Relief with the goal of providing emergency food assistance to families in the early weeks of the Covid-19 pandemic, while our local and regional governments built their own longer-term relief programs. The City of Progreso and State of Yucatan now have their own food relief deliveries, planning to distribute 30,000 despensas in Progreso and surrounding communities this weekend with more promised over the next several weeks.

The federal government of Mexico announced this week that the nationwide quarantine period will extend until May 30. Until people can get back to work, families will continue to suffer. Progreso Relief will stay in close touch with the local government agencies to find out what more we can do to help our local communities.
